A commemorative panel was unveiled in September 2014 at the Atelierhaus23 studios on the Vering Canal. It explains the history of Asbest- und Gummiwerke Martin Merkel KG, an asbestos and rubber plant that was based on the site from 1913. The panel also commemorates the forced labourers who had to work there during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

The panel is made up of various clay tiles with different motifs. It was initiated by artists currently working in the studios, as well former members of the Merkel works council and a local history group known as the history workshop Wilhelmsburg & Hafen.
