‘Kindertransport –The Final Parting’ monument

A bronze sculpture commemorating the Kindertransport rescue mission from Nazi Germany was erected outside the southern exit of the Dammtor railway station in Hamburg in 2015. Between December 1938 and the start of the war on 1 September 1939, thousands of Jewish children were sent from Germany to the UK and other countries on these rescue transports, including around 1,000 Jewish children from Hamburg. In many cases, the children were the only members of their family to survive.

The sculpture by Frank Meisler and Arie Ovadia was financed through private donations. It was temporarily relocated to the neighbouring Planten un Blomen park while the train station underwent a three-year renovation. It returned to Dag-Hammarskjöld-Platz in May 2022. Similar sculptures commemorating the Kindertransport by the artist Frank Meisler, curated by Lisa Sophie Becher MBE, are located in Berlin, Hoek van Holland, Gdansk and London.
