Memorial for Deserters and Other Victims of the Nazi Military Judiciary

'The Memorial for Deserters and Other Victims of the Nazi Military Judiciary' was dedicated on Stephansplatz/Dammtor on 24 November 2015 by Hamburg First Mayor Olaf Scholz and the former deserter Ludwig Baumann. It commemorates victims of National Socialism who went unacknowledged for a long time.

The memorial between Stephansplatz and Dammtor was built on the basis of a unanimous resolution by the Hamburg Parliament and was the result of lengthy, intensive discussions involving victims’ associations, the Alliance for a Hamburg Deserters’ Memorial, scholars and other experts.

In 2013, the Hamburg Cultural Authority announced an international design competition for a new memorial site. In June 2014, the jury awarded first place to the concept by the Hamburg-based artist Volker Lang (born 1964). After intensive planning and preparation, construction began in July 2015 and the memorial was completed in November 2015.

The open structure is an equilateral triangle that makes reference to the monuments around it, namely, the ‘76^th Monument’ designed by Richard Kuöhl (1936) and the counter-monument by Alfred Hrdlicka (1983–86). This prominently located memorial aims to make an important political statement for civil courage and justice.

Part of the memorial is it's addition with steles at eight historical places relating to military justice in Hamburg. The steles stand at following places:

• Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Gräberfeld Deutscher Soldaten (Ida-Ehre-Allee)
• Generalkommando der Wehrmacht in Hamburg (Sophienterrasse 13)
• Gericht des Admirals der Kriegsmarinedienststelle Hamburg (Ballindamm 25)
• Gericht des Kommandierenden Generals und Befehlshabers im Luftgau XI/Sitz des Gerichtsherrn (FüAk, Manteuffelstraße 20)
• Hinrichtungsstätte im Untersuchungsgefängnis am Holstenglacis (Wallanlagen),
• Kaserne in der Bundesstraße als Dienstsitz von Heeresgerichten (Sedanstraße 19A)
• Standortschießplatz am Höltigbaum (Neuer Höltigbaum 2)
• Wehrmachtuntersuchungsgefängnis Altona (Gerichtstraße 2).
