Memorial panel for the ‘Jews’ house’ at Bundesstrasse 43

‘Stumbling stones’ (Stolpersteine) for persecuted residents of the Warburg-Stift building

Under the National Socialists, the Warburg-Stift residential home located at Bundesstrasse 43 was used as one of many so-called ‘Judenhäuser’ or ‘Jews’ houses’. Jewish men and women were forced to leave their own homes and move into these cramped living spaces. More than 150 people were deported between 1941 and 1942 from the Warburg-Stift via assembly points in the city and the Hannoversche Bahnhof to ghettos and concentration camps. Very few of them survived.

In the summer of 2022, a memorial panel was installed which recounts the history of the building and the deportation of its Jewish residents. Today the building is part of the University of Hamburg.
