Memorial plaque on the central train station in memory of the deportees

Commemorative plaque at the central railway station.
Plaque commemorating the deportations at the central railway station.

In 1993, the German-Jewish Society of Hamburg dedicated a memorial plaque to the Jews deported from Hamburg. The text on the plaque reads:

‘From October 1941 to February 1945, nearly six thousand people were deported from the nearby former Hannoverscher Bahnhof, as ordered the National Socialist state, enforced by the state and uniformed police, and conveyed by the German Reichsbahn, on seventeen transports bound for:
LODZ,
MINSK,
RIGA,
AUSCHWITZ,
THERESIENSTADT.
The vast majority of them died in great suffering simply because they were, or were considered to be, Jews – victims of racial fanaticism.
You, too, must ensure
that such a thing never happens again!

Three trains also carried 1,264 Sinti and Roma people to Bełzec and Auschwitz.
