‘The Prisoner’ Sculpture in St Jacobi Church
The bronze sculpture entitled ‘Der Gefangene’ (‘The Prisoner’) by the sculptor Jürgen Weber (1928–2007) was donated by the Nähring family in 1995. It stands in the Schröder's hall of St Jacobi, one of the main Protestant churches in Hamburg. The year ‘1945’ is inscribed in the pedestal. The sculpture commemorates the end of World War II, the downfall of National Socialism and the liberation of hundreds of thousands of prisoners. The bronze figure is an emaciated man marked by the hardships of imprisonment, wearing a prisoner’s uniform and wrapped in a cloak.
